Mechanical properties of dense mycelium-bound composites under accelerated tropical weathering conditions

Chan, X. Y.; Saeidi, N.; Javadian, A.; Hebel, D. E.; Gupta, M.

What is it about?

Dense, hot-pressed mycelium boards (approx. 954 kg/m³) of Ganoderma lucidum on oil palm empty fruit bunch fibres and Albizia sawdust as a particleboard alternative. Uncoated and wood-oil-coated samples were exposed to tropical conditions (27.5 °C, 75 % RH) for 35 days. All strengths dropped markedly; the coating slowed the degradation, but significantly only for tensile strength.

Notes on data extraction

Taken: values for day 0 and day 35 from the results text (n = 3). Values for days 7 and 21 are shown only in Fig. 2 or in the supplementary tables and were not taken. The measurements are distinguished by the “conditioning” field (day 0 / day 35).
