Effect of fungal species on thermal conductivity and chemical composition in mycelium-based insulation
Wildman, J.; Henk, D.; Walker, P.; Shea, A.
What is it about?
18 strains (17 species) of selective white-rot fungi were grown on hemp shiv under identical conditions. All composites reached λ < 0.1 W/(m·K), 0.0409 W/(m·K) on average; differences between species were significant but small and related more to density than to the chemistry measured by FTIR.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hemp shiv · Lentinus tigrinus (LT) | Lentinus tigrinus | 100 % Hemp shiv (untreated) · average approx. 10 × 2 mm · ProRep (UK) | 1 | |
| Hemp shiv · Pholiota adiposa (PA) | Pholiota adiposa | 100 % Hemp shiv (untreated) · average approx. 10 × 2 mm · ProRep (UK) | 1 |
Notes on data extraction
Only the overall mean (λ = 0.0409 ± 0.0004 W/(m·K), 76 specimens) and the minimum (Pholiota adiposa) and maximum (Lentinus tigrinus) are given as numbers in the text; the other 16 strains (incl. Agrocybe aegerita, seven Ganoderma species, Laetiporus sulphureus, five Pleurotus species, two T. versicolor cultures) are shown only graphically and are therefore not entered as experiments. Correlation λ–density: r = 0.408.
