A Study on the Sound Absorption Properties of Mycelium-Based Composites Cultivated on Waste Paper-Based Substrates

Walter, N.; Gürsoy, B.

What is it about?

Pleurotus ostreatus was grown on waste paper, cardboard and newsprint (shredded or finely ground); sound absorption was measured in an impedance tube (500 Hz–6.4 kHz and 50 Hz–1.6 kHz). Cardboard-based samples proved sound-absorbing (mean α 0.36–0.42); finely ground newsprint and shredded paper were not dimensionally stable. A prototype acoustic panel was also produced.

Notes on data extraction

Taken from Table 4 (mean ± SD; combination of Ø 100 mm and Ø 29 mm specimens) and Table 5 (mean). Paper, newsprint and Ecovative variants are shown only graphically (preliminary test) and were not taken. Observations: strongest warping for finely ground paper, least for the Ecovative mix; finely ground newsprint crumbled after drying.
